Jan Matejko House is a very old building, in which outstanding Polish painter came into the world, lived with his loved ones, painted pictures and eventually died.

Jan Matejko was not only a great painter, but also an art collector, one of the greatest of his contemporaries. For this reason, in his house we can find a really impressive collection of exhibits. Museum of Jan Matejko House was opened in 1895 and since 1904 is one of the branches of the National Museum in Cracow.

The idea to organize a museum in the house of Jan Matejko appeared in the press the day after his funeral in 1893. It was very warmly received. Society started collecting money in order to purchase artists former home from his family and his works of art and other future exhibits. Recently exposure of Museum of Jan Matejko consists of over 6000 exhibits.

 Walking down the Florianska street you wil get to the Barbican - a masterpiece of the medieval military architecture.
